This SDAIE strategy incorporates basic illustrations and collaborative pairs/groups to help students recall vocabulary words or major concepts within a unit of review.
How to do it in the classroom:
Prepare a list of vocabulary words or concepts and write each one on a note card.
Arrange students in pairs or groups of four. Give each student a blank piece of paper.
Have students fold/divide the paper up into eight equal sections.
One student from each group will pick out eight different note cards.
Each student will draw pictures or symbols to represent the vocabulary words or major concepts on each square of their piece of paper. Students are not to label the drawings.
Students will exchange papers with a partner and try to correctly label their partner's drawings.
Why it benefits students:
Basic llustrations as the basis of review - ELL's can understand the concepts even if their English is still developing
Collaborative grouping - ELL's can work with other students who have greater mastery of the English language
Interactive and fun - all students can enjoy the activity and review concepts at the same time (different way of reviewing material)
